Application/extension of an electronic identity card (ESZIG)

Application/extension of a Hungarian electronic identity card (ESZIG)

The identity card is one of the basic identity documents, which serves for identification and verification of identity. Since 2016, the Hungarian permanent identity card contains an electronic storage element (chip), so electronic identity cards (ESZIG) are currently being issued.

Every Hungarian citizen listed in the Personal Data and Address Register (SZL) is entitled to a permanent identity card, regardless of whether they have permanent residence in Hungary or abroad. Hungarian citizens who are not listed in the SZL or who have become inactive cannot be issued an identity card; they must first apply to be registered in Hungary.

Citizens listed in the SZL can submit their application for the issuance of an identity card at our Consular Office, and it is also possible to initiate the registration of citizens not listed in the SZL at our Consulate.

You can submit your application in person at a previously agreed time. When submitting your application, please bring your existing (valid and/or expired) Hungarian documents with you.

We would like to draw your attention to the fact that when submitting an ESZIG application for a child under 14, both parents – and the child – must be present in person! In this case, please have the parents bring their existing Hungarian documents with them (if they do not have these, their foreign identity document).

After submitting the application, the documents are produced in Hungary, but it is also possible to request that the documents be delivered to the foreign mission.

Clients can pick up the completed documents in person at our Consulate, or we can mail them upon request.
