Information for Hungarian citizens in distress

Forms of consular protection

  • Facilitating the return home of someone in distress (basically) on their own
  • Providing assistance to a victim of an accident or violent crime involving serious injury
  • Providing assistance to a patient requiring serious and urgent care (combined condition)
  • Providing assistance to a person directly affected by a disaster, war or armed conflict (collectively: crisis)
  • Providing assistance to a person detained abroad
  • Assisting a relative obliged to bury a deceased person abroad in the administration of the funeral
  • Publishing informative travel advice (in order to avoid the situations described above)

The Consular Service uses all means at its disposal to provide assistance to those receiving consular protection in distress.

How can the Consular Service help someone in need who is entitled to consular protection?

  • A temporary passport can be issued for the return of the person to replace the lost, stolen, damaged or expired travel document
  • It provides advice on how to organize the return of the person to the country on their own or with the financial assistance of a relative or acquaintance
  • In a health emergency (serious and mass illness), it informs about the availability of local doctors and hospitals, and it helps in organizing any necessary and medically required or possible repatriation
  • In a crisis, it provides information and, if necessary, provides assistance in returning to the country or organizing evacuation
  • In the event of detention or arrest – if it becomes aware of this – it clarifies the reason and legal assessment of this, and monitors the circumstances of their detention
  • Upon request, it notifies the person’s relatives and, if necessary, an acquaintance who can help
  • It provides information on local interpreters and lawyers available in the given country
  • In the event of a death abroad, the Consular Service notifies the competent domestic bodies, who inform the relatives of a person who has died abroad about the death, and provide assistance with the burial and repatriation of the body.

What can the Consular Service not help with?

  • Organizing and assisting in travel abroad
  • Booking and rebooking tickets
  • Providing accommodation and housing; storing luggage
  • Repairing or having a vehicle repaired, providing fuel
  • Transporting passengers or luggage
  • Banking, insurance and postal services
  • Foreign employment placement, settling labor disputes
  • Providing legal representation before a court or other authority
  • Interpreting or translating, except for consular procedures
  • Obtaining foreign residence, work or other permits
  • Settlement of private law disputes (litigious or non-litigious)
  • Payment and advance payment of costs, official fines and fees (fines, bail, attorney's fees, healthcare fees, etc.) incurred abroad
  • Legacy, inheritance, unpaid wages, etc. in the recovery of In any form of cooperation in the investigation of a foreign crime
  • Influencing the course or outcome of an ongoing misdemean or or criminal proceeding (In this context, the Consular Service has no means or means to achieve release without legal recourse or special treatment.)
