Association of Hungarians in Sarajevo
HUM was founded in Sarajevo in 1993, during the Yugoslav War, with the aim of uniting and supporting the local Hungarian community. It has been active ever since, aiming to preserve the identity of the diaspora through community programs, Hungarian language education and cultural events. The work of HUM is also supported by a scholarship holder from the Sándor Kőrösi Csoma Program.
Association of Hungarian Citizens “HUM” – Sarajevo
The HUM Association of Hungarian Citizens (in local language: Humanitarna sredstva Mađara) celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2023. The association was founded in Sarajevo in July 1993, during the Yugoslav War, in response to the war situation and the need to unite the Hungarian community living there. Its founding members – Éva Pasity-Juhász and Béla Károlyi – are still actively involved in the work of the association, and the president of HUM is Irma Muratović.
The organization was originally established for humanitarian purposes, but after the Dayton Peace Agreement that brought peace, its cultural and community role came to the fore. Today, HUM has its own community space – the “HUM Hungarian House” – where we regularly organize programs: we provide Hungarian language education, offer children’s and family programs, offer workshops, and organize literary evenings and other community events.
The goal of the association is to preserve and strengthen the identity of the Hungarian diaspora community in Sarajevo. The work is carried out with the support of the State Secretariat for National Policy of the Prime Minister’s Office and with the participation of a scholarship holder of the Sándor Kőrösi Csoma Program.
Dobos was the newspaper of the HUM Hungarian Citizens Association in Sarajevo, the first issue of which was published in January 2005, and a total of 5 issues were published. Since the birth of Új Dobos in December 2006, we have been editing our bilingual magazine together with the Banja Luka-i Magyar Szó association, in which we regularly report on the activities and programs of the Hungarian associations.
The HUM would like to thank all those who contribute to the enrichment of the life of the Hungarian community in Sarajevo with their support, with special regard to the Hungarian Government, the State Secretariat for National Policy and the Bethlen Gábor Fund.
